Have you thought about Chess lately?

Many people are thinking about the beginning of basketball and hockey seasons, but did you know that this is also the beginning of the chess season? Although you can find tournaments across the country throughout the year, many tournaments for students are held during the academic calendar year. Several regional tournaments have already been conducted, but there are many more to come!

Chess is a great way to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. Chess tournaments are a fun and exciting way to practice skills and meet people with a similar interest in the challenging and dynamic game of chess. Most of the tournaments are one day and have nominal fees for participation.

A great organization to follow to find local and regional tournaments for students is the Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation. If you are not sure if you would like to play in tournaments, you can still practice and connect with other students online at the chesskid.com site. It is a student centered site that considers online student safety and is a fun way to play other chess enthusiasts. Also, with the holiday season approaching, there are lots of interesting programs and tools to learn the game of chess. WATG 2015

Our GT team both attended and presented at the Wisconsin Association for Talented and Gifted (WATG) in Wisconsin Dells on November 5 and 6. Team members were able to network with other schools and acquire important information about GT learning during the many conference breakout sessions. Congratulations to our team members, Nicole Smith and Brenda Rank for presenting at the conference. In their session "Unlocking the Code to Critical Thinking", they shared resources with other districts about developing student thinking through the use of computer coding and programming. Summer "Problem-A-Week" Math Review

It’s hard to believe summer is already here! Over the past school year, we work with students in math on problem solving. We've put together a “Problem-A-Week” file (as well as an answer key) if your child would like to continue on their problem solving journey this summer….in between camping, swimming and bonfires! This is completely optional and hopefully fun! Students usually love to solve problems alongside their parents, and see who is quicker…or correct. J

Summer Robotics Camp

Thank you to everyone who signed up to participate in Howard-Suamico's summer Robotics camp for students entering grade 4-5. Both the morning and afternoon sessions are currently full and has a waiting list for anyone still looking to still join. This camp is led by GT Specialist, Brenda Rank. We are looking forward to another great camp full of innovative projects!

Congratulations Madi!

Congratulations to Madi, a Bay Harbor second grader, who was recently announced as the Grand Prize winner of the Legacy Project's "Listen to a Life" essay contest.

Madi's award winning essay was chosen out of thousands of entries nationwide. Madi found out that she won the contest after sharing her story at an all-school assembly.

Elementary Writing Conference 2015

On May 8th, 10 Howard-Suamico fourth graders participated in a First Annual Elementary Writing Conference held at Heritage Hill. During this conference, students collaborated with other fourth graders from the West DePere, East DePere and Seymour school districts and participated in creative improv, poetry, radio ad writing and descriptive writing workshops.
